One of the areas where we as believers are attacked is our identity as sons and daughters of God. It is through our identity in God we can walk in freedom, dominion, and authority with power.
According to Merriam Webster dictionary; Identity is defined as the distinguishing character or personality of an individual. Other definition of identity is the relation established by the psychological identification.
Throughout the years, as I walked through the trials, seasons of desert, wilderness and valley; one thing I found was being attacked is my identity. Whenever I was attacked in this area, it didn’t only make me unstable in my emotions but also my strength to even get up and move on. This is the choicest weapon of enemy against every believer. He would attack the identity through rejection, trials, oppositions, at the moment I needed something. He attacks our identity through lies during our waiting season. In fact I would write that he keeps on attacking us in this area since the time we are born so that we would never walk in true freedom. He knows it so well that the moment believers establish their identity firmly in Christ, they start walking in freedom, power, dominion and authority that would shake his kingdom.
Sometimes, believers do have misplaced identity and they start finding their identity in the things they do, success, trophies and achievements. For some, they are as good as the highest position they achieve and the moment they are rejected or drop down from that; their identity is shaken. Shaken or misplaced identity can lead to depression, competition, jealousy, insecurities, fear, envy, hatred, suicidal thoughts or performance behavior. It robs a person of their true freedom and the image in which Christ created them.
JESUS attacked by Tempter
Let us look at the scriptures;
We know that when Jesus was baptized in the water by John, the Baptist; heavens were opened and a voice spoke “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.”
16As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. Suddenly the heavens were opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on Him. 17And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!
Matthew 3:16,17
Then Holy Spirit leads Jesus into the wilderness and now after 40 days of fasting he is tempted by Satan with this statement “If you are the Son of God.”
3The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”4Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command his angels concerning you and they will lift you up in their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” 7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.
Matthew 4:3-7
Wait a second, even before we discuss anything else, something to reflect upon is that Jesus started his ministry after his fasting for 40 days but Lord spoke even before that “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Did Jesus heal, preach or was crucified till then? The answer is no. It means that there is nothing that anyone can do by themselves to receive their identity. Our identity as sons and daughters of God was restored and firmly established as Jesus died on the cross and was resurrected. Nothing can deny or change this truth that we are the sons and daughters of God.
So, now when Satan tempts Jesus; he questions his identity during the most vulnerable moment of his life.
Let us go back to the Old Testament. Can you imagine Israelites being tempted during the wilderness in this area?
Enemy knows the moments when he can attack and he is like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. He can devour the identity during the most sensitive times. That is why it is important for a believer to be in prayers and continuously remind themselves of who they are in Christ Jesus.
Prodigal returns
Let us look at another scripture found in Luke 15. We read here about the prodigal who returns home and father asks his servants to bring the best robe, ring as seal of sonship and best shoes.
But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
Luke 15:22
Father understood that his son has returned and now he can be attacked with his identity of being his son and maybe he would feel that father does not love him the way he loves his elder son. To express his love and acceptance; father takes that step. It is similar with our heavenly father. The moment we accept Christ, he starts changing our clothes and restore our identity because it is from that place everything else flows.
Jesus said that I will not leave you as orphan. (John 14:18)
Scripture says that we have received the Spirit of adoption that cries out Abba Father. The Holy Spirit is a sign of our adoption.
The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”
Romans 8:15
The seasons of life that we are in right now, it is vital for us to know our identity and walk in it. We are not slaves but we are the children of God most high. We belong to the king of kings and Lord of lords.
There is nothing we could do to receive it and nothing we can do that can change this reality. Yes, you my beloved reader;
YOU are SON/DAUGHTER of GOD.
GOD LOVES YOU that HE GAVE HIS ONLY SON FOR YOU TO DIE ON THE CROSS.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16
Never allow anything else to dictate your identity
Have you seen a diamond? Who can tell the worth of the diamond?
It is either the one who purchased the diamond or the jeweler.
Have you ever seen a person who can’t afford the diamond? Their attitude will be to put the worth of that diamond down. They would speak every possible word to put it down. Enemy is like that. He would keep on speaking lies to put you down.
My beloved reader, you are the precious stone in the hands of your maker that is purchased by the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Never allow people, circumstances or the enemy of your soul to dictate your identity. He keeps on speaking lies but you remind yourself of the truth that God is speaking.
My beloved you are not everyone’s cup of coffee.
Look at yourself from the eyes of your father in heaven.
He finds you beautiful, lovable, victorious, soldier, strong, incomparable, irreplaceable. When he looks at you, he sees a tree bearing fruits. He sees his bride in you. There was nothing so more precious with him to bring you back to him that he has to crucify his only son. He sees a vessel of love, compassionate person in you. He sees the image of his son Jesus Christ in you. He sees a flower that is blooming. You are an apple of his eye. When anything touches you, he feels the pain more than you. He sees a crowned queen in you. His heart beats for you with all of his lovingkindness and compassion. He loves to sit with you and hear from you. He loves to spend time with you. He yearns for you.
Just lay yourself and ask him about his thoughts and feelings for you.
He is the lover of your soul. The lover who is compassionate and longs for you.
I wish I could pen down all that he feels for you my beloved reader but my prayer is that as you read this you will feel all that he feels for you and his truth will fill your mind. I pray that you will live in this encounter about your identity for the rest of the years of your life. In Jesus name, Amen.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly father, I pray that you will restore my identity in you and forgive me for believing the lies about me. I pray daddy that show me who I am in you and how you look at me. I want to experience your love and live in that love. In Jesus name, Amen.
My beloved reader, Look at yourself through father’s heart. You are so beautiful.
My Dear, YOU are his BELOVED in whom HE is WELL PLEASED
Who i am in Christ matters more than what others have to say about me or i feel about me.
Maybe you are reading this and never knew about the Lord who is a compassionate and loving father and want to give your life to him; Read this prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, I ask you to come into my heart and forgive my sins. I receive you as my savior who died and was resurrected for me. Come and do what you want to do in my life. I surrender my heart, mind, and soul to you. In Jesus name, Amen.
“May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” (Heb. 13:20-21)
