Christmas is the season when we celebrate the birth of our savior Jesus Christ. Most of us acknowledge that it was for the forgiveness of our sins and the love of father in heaven for us that he chose to sacrifice his only begotten son for us. One of the things that Jesus taught us is to forgive others seventy times seven which means that to forgive others until we no longer carry anything against them and to carry love for them. Not only Christians but all of us sometimes find it easy to forgive others and let it go but we struggle when it comes to forgiving ourselves. We sometimes become guilt conscious that it gets really hard for us to forgive ourselves for the past mistakes and look forward to the life that God have for each one of us. Guilt is one of the bondages any person can carry that keeps them from stepping ahead in their life. It is one of the traps of the enemy to hold us in our past as he knows it well that until we hold on to the things of past; God can not take us to the plans he has for us. Guilt causes self-hatred. It also causes person to be unstable in all that they do. It causes the hardening of heart and people with guilt start being harder on themselves. It is difficult for them to carry any relationship, job or anything else in healthy terms. Researchers found that guilt conscious people find it hard to sleep, they overdo the things, they justify everything, they are avoidant and loose their appetite. Studies have shown that the guilt can manifest itself physically in the form of physical pain, insomnia, fatigue, nausea, worry or tearfulness. However, having these physical symptoms does not conclude that you have the guilt and you need to forgive yourself.
Guilt is an enemy’s cage from which he never wants you to be out. In order to keep you in that cage; he would speak things like this: See what you did earlier; you don’t deserve anything good; better stop thinking about anything to happen good in your life; you spoiled the things; you are responsible for all the shit; you lied; you didn’t make an effort; it is your mistake; you are unworthy; no one can love you the way you are. Guilt can sometimes manifest in physical actions like suicide.
We as people of God need to understand that we are not called to live in the cage but in freedom that was given to us by our savior. We are called to live the healthy life.
Remember Adam and Eve?
Guilt was first found in the garden of Eden. It all started there. We all are familiar with the story of Adam and Eve from the book of Genesis. They broke the commandment of Lord; now they were guilty and as a result they were hiding from the Lord. The voice of Lord reaches to Adam. God asked him: Where are you Adam?
Today God is asking the same question to us.
Where are you my son/daughter?
Where are you hiding?
Jesus on the cross
Jesus being crucified on the cross cries out for the people: “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they do.” In other words, he said that father please do not count them guilty for any sin they have committed.
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
Luke 23:34
When the prize for the mistakes that we did has been paid on the cross than there is no point of keeping ourselves in the cage of guilt.
Guilt conscious people are like a man whose one step is forward but another step is stuck in the mud. He has to make an effort and pull the leg out of that mud to come out of it. The key to come out of this cage is with us. We just need to take this key and get released. Freedom has been given to us on the cross.
Why should I forgive myself?
We need to forgive ourselves for our freedom and a better life that is waiting for us. When God does not count us guilty for the sins that we did than there is no point of blaming ourselves or anyone else for anything that happened to us.
Having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.
Colossians 2:14
There can be no better time for the sons and daughters of most high God to take their place of authority than now. In order to take the place of authority; we need to forgive ourselves.
Jesus died to give us the healthy life. He suffered so that we can be healed physically, emotionally and spiritually. You might say the things like this: You have no clue about my past or mistakes. Yes, I don’t but God do have an idea and he does not count it anymore because of the blood shed on the cross for you and I.
“I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.
Isaiah 43:25
We all do mistakes. We all have past but it is completely upon us if we want to make an effort and come out of it or want to be stuck there.

Maybe you are reading this and never knew about the Lord who is a compassionate and loving father and want to give your life to him; Read this prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, I ask you to come into my heart and forgive my sins. I receive you as my savior who died and was resurrected for me. Come and do what you want to do in my life. I surrender my heart, mind, and soul to you. In Jesus name, Amen.
“May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” (Heb. 13:20-21)
